The adjectives and imagery most often associated with the words “car park” would undoubtedly be summarised as “dull”. Well, be prepared to challenge your preconceived ideas and marvel at the shortlist of the World’s 10 Coolest Car Parks. Yes, they do exist!
The contest, run by FX Magazine and Stress Free Airport Parking, recently announced the winner: Miami’s 1111 Lincoln Road, designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron. Already the recipient of numerous architectural awards, the $65 million project was described by the designers as the most “radical work” they had ever undertaken. Designed with no exterior walls, it provides spectacular views of the South Beach area. Likened to a “house of cards”, the structure has become an unexpected destination for tourists, as well as a coveted venue for weddings, wine-tastings and dinner parties.
Second and third place awards went respectively to Park de Celestins in Lyon, France and Sheffield’s Charles Street car park, which has been affectionately dubbed, “the Cheesegrater”. Both are feasts for photographers.
Congrats to Melbourne’s Eureka Tower Car Park (Fender Katsalidis Architects), proudly representing Australia in the top ten. Eureka Tower is well known in these parts for its very effective use of signage.
Enjoy!
