Brazilian people power leads to transport policy review

In a follow up to last week’s blog article on the protests in Brazil, the country’s President, Dilma Rousseff, has held discussions with ‘peaceful protest leaders’ in an attempt to end days of nationwide unrest.

The dialogue has led to the President unveiling a series of reforms including creating a national plan for urban public transportation and the promise of a multi-billion dollar injection into infrastructure projects. The plan is expected to be taken to a referendum allowing the people to have the ultimate decision.

While the protests involving more than 1.2 million people across 80 cities have led to a reversal of the bus fare hike which sparked the demonstrations, sadly according to reports they have left at least two people dead and 62 civilians injured.
