San Francisco City Parking Report

The San Francisco County Transportation Authority recently presented a report with in-depth recommendations and strategies for managing on and off-street parking, congestion and zoning districts across the city.

The Transportation Authority clearly embraced market principles for pricing in accordance with demand for space so that parking, particularly in commercial districts and spillover neighborhoods, is best utilised to serve the city’s competing interests for the scarce resource.

Many of the proposed measures have been modeled on recommendations and principles developed by Professor Donald Shoup, a leading urban planner in the field of car parking, transportation and land use. Some of these are quite innovative and progressive – there are some ‘Shoupian’ theories that have been recommended within the San Francisco report that are broadly applicable and worth taking the time to read!

The full report can be viewed online on the SFCTA website, On-Street Parking Study. There is also a summary of the report available on the SF Streets Blog which you can view here, and a 14-page powerpoint presentation summarising the report (as prepared by the Transportation Authority) available online here.

Cristina had the opportunity of listening to Professor Donald Shoup at the World Parking Symposium in Breda – more on this coming soon!
